In the previous post I connected my room's self-powered kinetic switch light to Home Assistant. Once I could control it from my phone, the next thing I wanted was to turn the light on and off by voice while lying in bed....
The light in my room came with the apartment, and on the wall there's a wireless switch with no wires at all. Who installed it, where it came from, what brand it is: I have no idea. After the AC and the air purifier had ...
On the night of July 31st, I noticed my "Currently Watching" page had stopped at July 25th. No error message. The server was fine, the page rendered fine, the anime half was still updating — only the movies and TV half h...
The Zed team's previous product was Atom. Atom was a fork of Chromium, and building it produced <Annot note="The framework that wraps web technology into desktop applications, which came out of Atom's development. It let...
My home server runs about thirty containers: this blog, a NAS dashboard, monitoring, a handful of self-hosted things. On top of that I do my actual development on it over VS Code Remote-SSH, against a 36 GB workspace hol...
The week after I moved house, my server started shutting itself down every night. Not a crash, not a reboot — death by power loss: every boot ran an ext4 recovery, uptime reset to zero, and whatever had been running a se...
It didn't start with a breach. It started with noise. My nginx feeds <Annot note="netdata: an open-source real-time system monitor that samples once per second and ships with a large set of health alerts. Its web_log gro...
Self-hosting long enough leads to an awkward question: the machine you're monitoring is the one running the monitor, so who tells you when it dies? I run Uptime Kuma to watch all my services, but it lives on the very mac...
A friend saw Palworld hit 1.0 and pulled me in. They'd cleared it once two years ago and wanted a fresh run through the big update, and I happened to have some free time. Honestly my first impression of the game wasn't g...
The morning I meant to run a routine health check on my home server, the very first number was already off: a <Annot note="Load average is roughly 'how many processes are queued waiting for the CPU.' On a 16-thread machi...
Every blog has to answer the same question: how does a post get from the database onto the reader's screen? For the past two years my site went with the laziest answer available: <Annot note="Client-Side Rendering; the b...
The background is the first thing anyone sees on the whole site, and the thing they should care about least. It's just decoration—a slowly turning starfield, a Saturn hanging off to the right. And yet this bit of decorat...
Back when I wrote about [that self-updating "Now Watching" page], I left a thread hanging: the anime data on it comes from an anime-tracking SDK I reverse-engineered myself. That post only mentioned it in one line, sayin...
The starting point actually had nothing to do with "watching." What I wanted was a little note-blog like Innei's — you finish something, toss in a link, jot a line. But there's one key fork between us: he maintains it by...
I wanted to move a fully offline NLLB translation feature from Python into Rust. The model is an int8-quantized NLLB-200 600M, reached through ct2rs (ctranslate2-rs), the binding onto CTranslate2. On Linux everyth...
On my server, "my own databases" are scattered all over the place: the blog, n8n, Uptime Kuma, 3x-ui, Jarvis and the NAS each have a SQLite file, and another project has a MongoDB on top of that. Every time I want to loo...
After the last post — that brutal fight with xl-ai and a local Gemma — I walked away with one conclusion burned into my brain: local models simply can't do tool calling. Gemma 3 27B couldn't even emit stable JSON, and an...
I'm building a strictly-offline desktop notes app, using BlockNote as the editor core. BlockNote has an official AI package, @blocknote/xl-ai, that does selection-based AI (improve writing / simplify / fix spelling / tra...
A while back I ran into a data-sync requirement at work. It started with the front end failing to reliably get a user's department (dept) name during login. So the DBA proposed a fix: go straight to the source — build a ...
Is there a song that, right when you're about to drown, reaches into the depths and hauls you up — so that suddenly you're out on an open sea, breathing in great lungfuls of air? For me, that song is 《老人と海》(The Old Man a...
Lately I started using Monaco Editor as my blog's admin editor. It's the core of VS Code — an editor built for writing code — and here I am writing blog posts in it, which is a little hardcore when you think about...
